European Outdoor Group discusses sustainability

During OutDoor in the summer the European Outdoor Group (EOG) held an open meeting to start to discuss the question of sustainability and what as an industry sector the outdoor market should be doing. The attendance at just over 60 was good, but in comparison to the total attendance figure of 19,000 visitors at the fair from all over the world, you could say it was meagre. But those that did attend represented the largest brands in the industry. At that meeting it was agreed to form a Steering Group and to arrange the first meeting for the end of October. (more…)

Price rise becomes reality

During his speech at the Press Conference for OutDoor 2008, the President of the European Outdoor Group Rolf Schmid painted a picture of an industry in change and stated quite clearly that the cost base for the future was in no way certain, with rising raw material costs, adverse exchange rates and a host of other factors all leading to the likelihood of increased prices to the consumer. UK’s OIA research highlights appetite for ‘bite sized’ adventures

A sustainable industry

During OutDoor in the summer the European Outdoor Group held an open meeting to start to address the question of sustainability and what as an industry sector the outdoor market should be doing. Following that initial meeting a further follow-up meeting has taken place in Friedrichshafen, those that confirmed attendance became the working group at least for the initial stages. (more…)

Economies of scale

For years economists had been warning that many of the world’s larger economies were looking unbalanced. A boom in house prices in the Anglo-Saxon economies led to a surge in debt-driven import levels that did not look sustainable. But the imbalances continued, year and year again, seemingly confounding expectations. That was until the American housing market implosion provided the spark for a worldwide sell-off of stocks and commodities, runs on inadequately-capitalised banks, and volatile currency markets. Complex and globalised financial markets meant that the losses were not confined solely to the US. (more…)

Topher Gaylord returns to the US

At the end of September Topher Gaylord left his position as President VF Outdoor and Action Sports International, (The North Face, Vans and Reef brands), based in Italy and moved back to his native USA. Topher was a proactive Director of the European Outdoor Group and the announcement that he was leaving Europe to take up a new position within the VF Corporation was sad news for the organisation.
