Sustainable Directions Breakfast
ISPO, Monday 4th February at 08.00 – 11.00hrs

Turmblick (Käfer Restaurant), East Entrance, First Floor, ISPO

Please join us for breakfast, with the aim of exploring and learning together about sustainability in this mini conference. Please bring your suppliers and customers with you.

At ISPO this year we will have Kevin Myette, director of product and supply chain sustainability, Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI) who will be providing an overview of the Chemicals Management Framework an output from the Outdoor Industry Association’s Chemicals Management Working Group.
The Framework is a comprehensive strategy assessment and planning tool to guide companies along the entire apparel and outdoor industry product value chain toward better chemicals management – from regulatory compliance to sustainable chemistry innovation. The Framework represents the collaborative work of retailers, brands, suppliers, government representatives, NGOs, academia and other subject-matter experts within the outdoor industry and beyond, and for the first time creates a common vision and a step-wise roadmap for all value chain partners to move collectively toward more sustainable chemistry — with the goal to ultimately reduce or eliminate hazardous chemicals in consumer products and their emissions to the environment and workplace.

The company who worked with PUMA on the Environmental Profit and Loss accounting system, Trucost will present ‘Understanding natural capital dependency – the business case and current approaches’. Trucost will present an approach to assessing the environmental impact of individual products in monetary terms, a process which seeks to provide businesses with a robust framework within which to embed environmental factors into strategic decision-making and with the ability to integrate that risk into financial planning. The presentation will include several examples of such analyses, including food products and clothing, an explanation of the business case for work of this nature and details of the key challenges faced in developing and applying the methodology.

Vanessa Knowles, project manager for the EOG will provide an overview and update of the EOG’s Sustainability Working Group, and Jason Kibbey, the executive director for the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) will provide an update on the Higg Index and will also provide a preview of furture plans with the Higg Index and the SAC. The Higg Index came out of the ECO Index that was jointly developed by the European Outdoor Group and the US Outdoor Industry Association, and is being continuously developed to provide a complete apparel and footwear self-assessment tool.

Nick Morley of Oakdene Hollins will present ‘Textile Recycling in Europe’, the current state of clothing reuse and recycling across Europe, with the associated environmental and economic issues. He will look at likely future trends and innovations, including the potential for closed loop fibre recycling.

Footwear Index

ISPO, Monday 4th February at 13.00 – 15.00hrs

Room B52, above Hall B5, East Entrance, First Floor, ISPO

On Monday afternoon you will have the opportunity to take a first look at the new Footwear Index. Betsy Blaisdell, environmental stewardship, Timberland, who is a Chair of the Footwear Committee will present how to work through the Footwear Index and offer you the opportunity to get involved in piloting of this new industry wide tool. During the meeting you will be given:

Pilot Training: Overall process for Brand/Product/Facility Module completion and feedback.

Live demo: General online application features; how to use the Modules.

Live demo: How brand and suppliers can invite facilities to participate in the pilot.

Live demo: The facility pilot perspective – what they will see, what permissions will be like, etc.

Higg Index Training

ISPO, Monday 4th February at 16.00 – 17.00hrs

Room B52, above Hall B5, East Entrance, First Floor, ISPO

Jason Kibbey will provide you with a walk through of the Higg Index, how it works, how you could use it to help your business and understand what benefits you can gain from being involved.

This will be an in-depth look with the opportunity to ask specific questions. It will provide you with a look at the different modules for Brand; Product; and Facility.

For those of you not yet familiar with the Higg Index you may like to download it and take a look before attending the meeting:

——–

All the above events are FREE for anyone attending ISPO, but you do need to register by emailing Vanessa.Knowles@europeanoutdoorgroup.com

Payment of a living wage is a key point in the FWF Code of Labour practices – and one of the most difficult elements to implement.

Wages are linked to the prices brands negotiate with factories, however several complex questions need to be addressed to ensure that workers see actual improvements.

The Fair Wear Foundation-European Outdoor Group Living Wage Study is designed to address one of the main questions – What is the relationship between product pricing and wage levels. The study will examine what happens to prices of typical products when wages are increased to meet a variety of living wage benchmarks.

The participation of seven FWF members from the outdoor industry, who will provide actual cost data on a variety of products to FWF for analysis, is a significant milestone. The ability to forecast the impact of wage increases on the costs of real products will provide clear guidance to the entire outdoor industry on the actual effects of moving towards living wage benchmarks. Important elements of the study will also be applicable to other apparel markets. FWF believes that the willingness of the participating brands to share such sensitive information indicates a serious level of commitment to the issue.

In early 2013, a report will be published that will summarise the study’s findings, and will make use of the FWF Wage Ladder Tool to illustrate the results. Read more…

EOG startet European Outdoor Summit™

Market Research Q&A Session

Tuesday 30th January at 11.00 – 12.00hrs, Room B52, East Entrance, ISPO

With the help of its membership and other outdoor companies (you don’t need to be a member to join the project), the European Outdoor Group (EOG) has published the most authoritative report on the market that has ever existed. The feedback received from current partners has all been very positive.

This report is a very useful business tool and, whilst the detailed data remains confidential between the participants, some key percentages have been published to support media, retailers and other industry partners. Communications and Marketing Associate Mathias Basedow commented, “The figure of around 10 billion Euros, which pops up again and again, was our first estimate of the total market size before the expert meeting. That this group have been able to confirm that this that we were close is great, but of course the only way you will be able verify this is by participating and getting the report.”

The current published figures are for 2010, the report for 2011 will be ready for the OutDoor Show in July to make it even more beneficial for decision makers. This shortens the period to join the project meaning that applications can only be accepted up to the end of February. If brands are interested in joining the next survey the EOG is offering a special Question and Answer Session.

Mathias Basedow added, “With Petzl joining, we now have one of the few missing international key players with us, but we hope to encourage, for this second edition, many more medium-sized brands to become involved. As the report is broken down by country as well as product category it is important that we encourage locally successful brands, of high relevance in European markets, to participate, and we will therefore have this informal Question and Answer Session at ISPO. Interested brands will get a feeling for the report, but we will not be sharing the detailed figures nor will we publish new figures. This is a brand-focused event and therefore our research partners will join us to help address any possible concerns. We will also explain fully the confidential data supply process, which involves a notary. Some interested brands did not realise that even the EOG itself is not able to gain access to the figures before they are converted to anonymous data by the notary.”

Based on the actual data supplied by 80 key companies, the ‘European Outdoor Group – State of the Trade 2010’ report delivered hard sales figures on markets and products to the participating companies and key percentages to the whole industry.

The research is a long-term project, it’s not too late for brands to join in, find out how they supply the data confidentially, and benefit as well. The Market Research Q&A Session is the ideal opportunity to learn more and get involved.

The EOG reserves the right to decline requests for participation if, for whatever reasons, it is considered that a brand’s involvement would not be in the wider interests of the project.

Tuesday 30th January at 12.30 – 13.00hrs

Room B52, East Entrance, ISPO*

The EOG’s Sustainability Working Group is please to announce a short presentation at ISPO from the new Material Traceability Working Group (MTWG). Traceability is the focus, as it is the key for brands to be able to make claims about their products and to be able to tell customers and NGOs how and where their products are manufactured. This new Group will be composed of different ‘task forces’ that are composed of experts and or interested stakeholders in specific material supply chains. Initially, the plan is to launch a Down Task Force to establish traceability systems for down and feather supply chains and a Content Claims Standard Task Force to expose the work the Textile Exchange has done with the CCS to a broader audience.

“There has been a steady trend for the supply chain to become more complicated and lacking in transparency over the past two decades. The process of creating products which are compatible with the values shared by most of us will not be easy. However, though it may take time, we have to start to co-operate to find and implement possible solutions. Making sure the supply chain is easier to trace is one of the industry’s key tasks in the upcoming decade and we therefore encourage all brands to join the meeting.” comments EOG secretary general Mark Held.

The MTWG will be composed of different ‘task forces’ that are composed of experts and or interested stakeholders in specific material supply chains. Initially, the plan is to launch a Down Task Force to establish traceability systems for down and feather supply chains and a Content Claims Standard Task Force to expose the work the Textile Exchange has done with the CCS to a broader audience, and to finalise the standard and implement it in various supply chains.

The MTWG, Chaired by Steve Richardson from Patagonia and Vice-Chaired by Anne Gillespie from Textile Exchange will have a short presentation followed by a discussion on Tuesday 31st January, at 12.30, in Room B52, anyone interested in the subject is welcome to attend.

*Please note that you do require ISPO tickets for admission to events and you should ensure that you make your own arrangements for these to avoid disappointment.

The EOG website is online again and you are very welcome to explore the developments.

One of the biggest changes is the availability of German and French versions plus the increased focus on information exchange in the sector.

Marketing and communications associate Mathias Basedow advises, “While the Outdoor Market becomes more and more truly European, a lot of information still stays quite regional. We will try to change this and are encouraging our members to add the site to their news distribution routes – so the industry itself and the mainly national orientated media have easy access to unedited Industry News. One of the next planned extensions is a list of European trade media and job platforms. There’s still a long way to go, but I think we are on the right track.”
Visit the site now and find out more – comments and suggestions to improve content and presentation are very welcome: admin@europeanoutdoorgroup.com

The European Outdoor Group (EOG) welcomes the announcement of the formation of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition and the Coalition’s adoption of the work of the outdoor industry’s Eco Index. From the beginning the aim with the Eco Index has been the creation of a single, common index for apparel that drives change within the outdoor industry supply chain and broadens the Eco Index work to allow for adoption in the broader apparel and footwear sectors.

Following three years of work by the outdoor industry, the Eco Index was released in July of 2010 and has been piloted by more than 100 companies. The development of the Eco Index is due to the hard work of outdoor industry companies whose thought leadership in the area of sustainable manufacturing has produced robust, transparent and open-source content which is being adopted by other sustainability efforts.

Mark Held, Secretary General of the European Outdoor Group commented, “The European outdoor industry should be extremely proud of the work that has gone in to making the Eco Index a tool that is appropriate to a much wider audience. The outdoor industry is committed to the development of a single, common index for apparel and footwear. In Europe we have also been leading on two additional efforts to support the international industry, the SIGNs webtool launched at ispo in February, which will help all companies to find a way through the myriad of labels, standards and regulations; and an industry End of Life solution that will be launched at OutDoor in the Summer.”

During 2011, members of the EOG’s Sustainability Working Group will have the opportunity to pilot the initial version of the Coalition’s apparel tool and to participate in the development of a tool specific to footwear. The EOG is also committed to its partnership with the Outdoor Industry Association, FESI, World Federation of Sporting Goods Industries and other groups to improve the Eco Index content based on feedback from the piloting process, to share these updates with the Sustainable Apparel Coalition and to further enhance the Eco Index’s application for outdoor gear such as tents, backpacks, climbing and paddling gear, bicycles, skis and camping gear.

The European Outdoor Group (EOG) and the Clean Clothes Campaign (CCC) are pleased to be able to announce an outdoor industry roundtable to discuss the issues surrounding ‘a living wage’.

Over recent years there has been a growing awareness about the need to ensure the provision of a living wage to workers within global supply chains. This is especially the case in most Asian countries where the national wage legislation falls short of allowing textile workers a wage from which they can provide for a family.

Mark Held, Secretary General of the EOG commented, “the crucial issue is not the principle involved, as that should be accepted by everyone with a conscience, but more how to calculate a fair wage and what mechanisms can be use to ensure its provision. In short, how can a fair wage policy be implemented?”

The EOG sees its role as a conduit to provide everyone working within the outdoor industry with information and to introduce potential solutions. Working closely with the CCC, it is pleased to be able to offer the industry the opportunity to participate in a roundtable meeting on the subject of a living wage.

Together with representatives from the Asia Floor Wage Alliance (AFW), the CCC-Network and the Fair Wear Foundation (FWF), the EOG is providing a platform for the industry to discuss the current state of living wage models and the possible implementation solutions. After the presentations there will be enough time to have open questions and possibilities for cooperation between those present.

The roundtable takes place on Thursday, 27th of October in Berlin; speakers will include:

Ms Annanya Bhattacharjee, Society for Labour and Development, India

The coordinator of global activities of the Asia Floor Wage Alliance (AFW).

Ms May Wong, Globalisation Monitor, Hong Kong

A member of the International Steering Committee of the Asia Floor Wage Alliance (AFW).

Ms Ineke Zeldenrust, Clean Clothes Campaign International Secretariat, The Netherlands

Mr Henrik Lindholm, Fair Wear Foundation (FWF), The Netherlands

The international verification coordinator of the FWF.
Places at the event are strictly limited and by invitation only. Anyone wishing to attend should send an email to Mark Held:

Following the publication of the notice of expiry of certain antidumping measures today, the European footwear alliance (EFA) welcomes the end of EU anti dumping duties on leather footwear on April 1, 2011. Although the positive news of termination was shared already at the beginning of January it is only now that our industry can start planning and developing its future business strategies for footwear.

EFA remains vigilant and cautious on the Commission’s stated initiative to monitor for one year the evolution of the imports of footwear with uppers of leather originating in the People’s Republic of China and Vietnam. We are looking forward to maintaining an ongoing open dialogue with the Commission on development and assessment of the import figures.

It is in the common interest of EFA members, the Commission and member-states to understand any concerns as they arise and work on appropriate solutions as necessary. Footwear industry members as represented by EFA are operating on mid-term production plans and commitments well beyond a 12 months cycle.

Open markets will provide the best conditions for a strong European footwear sector in the future

European producers have repositioned to play to their strengths. The latest available figures show very encouraging improvements in Italy, which accounts for nearly half of the EU’s production value. Indeed Italian exports in the 2nd and 3rd quarters increased by nearly 20%. Over the 4th quarter, exports even increased by around 30%! This demonstrates Italy’s competitiveness and reflects the global reality that consumer demand is increasing in emerging markets, whereas it is less dynamic in the mature markets of Europe.

Future jobs and economic growth lie in those parts of the supply chain in which Europe is most competitive. In footwear, this is in brand building, design, research and development, production technology, logistics, retail and marketing, as well as in the manufacturing of top-fashion and high-end footwear.

Removal of the EU’s anti-dumping duties will provide relief for the majority of footwear stakeholders including:

European consumers, who ultimately had to bear the costs arising from anti-dumping duties;

European retailers, who still operate in a highly competitive environment on extremely tight margins and are fighting to maintain sales volume and jobs in the European Union;

The many European footwear brands, who outsource manufacturing, or part thereof as part of their strategies to provide best possible value to European consumers as well as to expand in other growing markets.

All footwear manufacturers have been hit by the global supply shortage in leather. Together with the price-increases in synthetic and other materials it has resulted in major cost increases for raw-materials. Labour costs have increased significantly in Asia over the last years likewise the transport costs. Imports are therefore becoming more expensive. Removal of the anti-dumping duties will help offset some of these challenging cost increases.

Providing the right trade and regulatory environment to nurture all parts of the supply chain, in which Europe is currently competitive, is essential to maintaining economic growth and securing and creating jobs in Europe in this sector. The removal of regressive tariffs is definitely a step in the right direction.

In this understanding we welcome the European Commission’s new top priority on tackling barriers to trade as EU Trade Commissioner Karel de Gucht pointed out with the publishing of the first EU report on trade barriers in March.
