Microfibres – Research Update and Current Findings

Monday 19th June, 13:00 – 14:00

Sophie Mather from Biov8tion and Mark Taylor from the University of Leeds reported on research they are currently working on. Sophie Mather gave a top line and mid project update from lab based research, focusing at the polymer and yarn level. This was followed by an overview by Mark Taylor on a project which is looking at the fabric level and the development of an industry standard.

Solving Challenges and Adding Value through DNA-based Tracers

Monday 19th June, 14:00 – 15:00

Alain Jeanrenaud from Haelixa talked about how they provide DNA-based tags that are introduced inside raw materials (e.g. dye or polymer). Reading out a DNA code allows for the tracing of textiles and their constituents throughout their complete life cycle – from raw material production, throughout manufacturing, supply chain, product use, and even recycling. This circular economy approach enables a sustainable and transparent product life cycle.

Closing the Loop of PET Value Chain: De-polymerization by Microwaves

Monday 19th June, 15:00 – 16:00

Maurizio Crippa from gr3n talked about how they invented and industrialized a technology that enables chemical de-polymerization of PET at industrial scale. Its microwave-based process allows the company to recover the monomers of the polyester with the same quality of those from oil and gas. The PET life-cycle closing through a circular economy value chain is thus possible and gr3n’s de-polymerization can reduce plastics market dependency from natural resources and improve the environmental footprint of PET production.

Product Development to Meet Sustainability Demands: Test Methods and Interpretation

Monday 19th June, 16:00 – 17:00

Tom Wright from the University of Innsbruck’s Institute for Textile Chemistry and Textile Physics talked in this presentation about simple methodologies and examples of structuring research to efficiently glean data and knowledge. The approach involves textile testing as an integral part of the product design and development process and results must be appropriately interpreted and communicated to multidisciplinary shareholders and third parties during the design process in order to transfer knowledge and set expectations.  As the industry starts to focus more on sustainable and environmentally considerate products and legislation changes to reflect this, the importance of testing and evaluation increases.

Industry Breakfast

This year’s OutDoor industry breakfast focused on the impact of the global environmental discussion and its impact on OutDoor.

Daniel Ford from Foresight Factory talked about consumer attitudes and shopping behaviours - the impact of the global environmental discussion.

Microfibre Research Update: Proctor & Gamble

Tuesday 20th June, 9:00 – 10:00

Expert in the cleaning and care of laundry, P&G has been studying the impacts of care products on the issue of microfibre release during the wash cycle. The research has been led by Neil Lant who shared some of the early results on the impact of different types of fabrics and consumer wash loads as well as the impact of fabric care products and wash cycles on microfibre release. He also discussed test methodology and the importance of developing methods which allow for proper statistical analysis.

Higg Brand Module Benchmarking of Eight Brands – the results

Tuesday 20th June, 10:00 – 11:00

Antje Fehling  from Helly Hansen and Karin Ekberg from Leadership and Sustainability presented and discussed the results of benchmarking eight outdoor brands. For the benchmarking both the social and the environmental questionnaire of the SAC (Sustainable Apparel Coalition) Higg Brand Module were used. The results had been anonymised. The results were interesting in regards to the degree of alignment and adoption of the Higg Brand Module by brands – both SAC members and non-members.

Mark Sumner from the University of Leeds explored what the opportunities there are for greater alignment between brands and their suppliers that delivers values to both. Can brands engage with their extended supply chain partners to deliver brand objectives for sustainability? Can brands engage with suppliers to improve transparency throughout the supply chain? Can brands integrate all of this with driving innovation?

Consumer Attitudes and Shopping Behaviour: Engaging with the more eco-friendly shopper

Tuesday 20th June, 13:00 – 14:00

The presentation focused on the attitudes of different consumer groups when it comes to shopping and the decision-making process. Specifically, Foresight Factory used its global consumer trend research to explore the opportunities and challenges companies face in engaging with more environmentally aware consumers and their desire for greater openness and transparency from brands.

Empower the Supply Chain! - CSR Supplier Trainings (tier 2)

Tuesday 20th June, 14:00 – 15:00

Bettina Roth from Vaude talked in detail about VAUDE´s experiences with tier 2 supplier trainings, follow up of CAPs and upcoming challenges and opportunities during the project, and shared many of the experiences that VAUDE gained in their ”Environmental Stewardship in the Textile supply Chain” project that they kick-started in 2015.

Effective Collaboration in the Wool Supply Chain

Tuesday 20th June, 15:00 – 16:00

Verena Keller from Südwolle examined the importance of transparency and effective communication throughout the delivery of high-quality, wool-based yarns.  No matter if you are processing yarns or selling outdoor fashion as a sports brand, wool sourcing and traceability along the supply chain is becoming increasingly important.

The ZDHC Chemical Gateway

Tuesday 20th June, 16:00 – 17:00

Graham Storrie on behalf of ZDHC, and Ben Wilde from Adec Innovation, presented The ZDHC Chemical Gateway - the world’s first database of safer chemistry to assist brands, suppliers and chemical producers make better sourcing decisions. They introduced the audience to key information on the gateway along with a full explanation of its potential and uses.
