Material Facts is a methodological tool that transforms the outdoor industry’s approach to sharing information about its products. It provides transparent and accurate product sustainability data, by adopting the labelling standards used in the food industry.
The methodology allows for clear, digestible documentation of product data by components (or product ‘ingredients’) that both retailers and consumers can view in a standardised format.
The Material Facts table currently encompasses key criteria such as recycled content, PFAS status, the country of manufacture, and renewable energy in the supply chain. The table enables responsible decision-making for sourcing and purchasing. It avoids misleading information relating to a product’s sustainable features.
Adopting the methodology allows brands to proactively prepare for data requirements in upcoming ESG legislation.
A group of like-minded technical outdoor apparel and hard goods brands determined to standardise an industry data methodology.
The first phase of the Material Facts Collective has now concluded. With participation from leading brands across the UK, Europe, USA, and Canada, the working group has successfully revised the data methodology, developed an implementation toolkit, and created a roadmap for adding new criteria to Material Facts tables.
These outputs will benefit adopting brands both now and in the future by providing an aligned industry standard for product data methodology.
