Last week the first fully digital ISPO Munich Online took place. While it was unfortunate that we are unable to meet up in person at ISPO, our partners at Messe München were able to offer a packed programme of over 150 keynotes, workshops, panel sessions and insightful presentations over the 5 days.
Messe München have hailed the event a success and appreciate the support from the Outdoor and wider sporting industry.
Figures released by Messe München show there were 545 exhibitors and the fully digital show attracted a reported 31,575 visitors from 110 countries.
In addition 22,000 people attended the Public- stream events, these, including the ISPO Award ceremonies are still available on the ISPO Youtube channel

The EOG were heavily involved in many aspects of the show and provided insights from our work across the main programme, closed webinars and special members-only meetings and sessions in our own channels.

The sessions each day were themed around a key topic:

Day 1: Innovations & Creativity (Monday, February 1, 2021).

On Monday the show started with an introduction by Klaus Dittrich, Chairman of the board, Messe München Gmbh and World Champion Long Jumper Malaika Mihambo followed by a keynote "Corona is not a megatrend".

Head of Research and Insights at the EOG, Pauline Shepherd ran a well attended session around our participation research with Its Great Out There and Pippa Goodman from Foresight Factory

EOG Head of CSR Katy Stevens also organised a closed meeting of the Sustainability Steering Group.

Day 2: Digitalization & Sportstech Conference Europe (Tuesday, February 2, 2021)

Day 2 was all about Digitalisation and the Sportstech Conference Europe.

Jane Turnbull (EOG) organised a Hard Goods Round table - Circularity in Hard Goods meeting for EOG members. This was an introduction to the subject of circularity and how it relates to the hard goods sector.

Day 3: Health (Wednesday, February 3, 2021)

Day 3 addressed a subject that has been more important to many this year than ever before, it was also a busy day for the EOG team.

EOG Head of Retail Peter Ottervanger and Head of Research Pauline Shepherd organised a meeting of the Retail Meets Brand - Retail Sustainability Standards group.

The EOG’s CSR and Sustainability team invited members to a successful, relaxed and informal Sustainability Lunch get together to introduce Verity Hardy, who recently joined the team. It was also an opportunity to provide updates on what the EOG has been working on during 2020 and what their priorities are for 2021. Contact for more information.

Pauline Shepherd, EOG Head of Research, introduced an incredibly popular session with Marc Anderman from Sport Marketing Surveys. Performance of  the cycling market during 2020, growth and future developments. This session was part of our partnership with Sports Marketing Surveys and while the core outdoor market is key for The European Outdoor Group, it is also important for us to understand the dynamics in other wider outdoor activities. Pauline Shepherd also introduced and supported Pippa Goodman (Foresight Factory) and Margo de Lange (Its Great Out There Coalition) during an interactive session taking a deeper dive into the outdoor activity participation research we carried out in 2020. Again this was a very popular session, showing once again how valuable this research is to the outdoor and wider sporting markets.

Day 4: Sustainability (Thursday, February 4, 2021)

Day 4 was another busy and important day for the EOG team. Athlete Kilian Jornet started the day with an insightful and inspiring keynote. The day's main programme continued in a similar vein, and was packed with great initiatives, technologies and a focus on how the outdoor and sports industry can become more sustainable in all areas.

Pauline Shepherd introduced a very popular EOG session with Josie Fabian from Brandwave. The power of connection - building and utilising a brand community.

Later, Pauline also presented an update on Market Data - Measuring the European outdoor market with brand shipment data (Sell in/ Wholesale) and retail sell thru ( point of sale) figures. Using data from The State of Trade Report (Sell In) and  the Outdoor Retail Benchmark Report. Pauline was also able show case our newly launched data collection and reporting portals for both reports and to talk about some of our plans for 2021.

Day 5: Friday for Good (Friday, February 5, 2021)

Day 5 was set aside for Friday for Good initiatives. The day started with an introduction from Tobias Gröber Head of Consumer Goods, Messe München Gmbh and Mark Held President, European Outdoor Group.

Tobias and Mark introduced the day and looked ahead to plans for OutDoor by ISPO: The Global Summit edition 2021 which will be held on 6-8 July 2021, more detailed news to come on this soon.

The day continued with a packed programme from a wide range of sources, all focussed on making our industry more sustainable and protecting the environments and wild places we all love.

Our partners at EOCA along with Liesl Truscott, Director of European & Materials Strategy, Textile Exchange were on a panel interview moderated by EOG Head of CSR Katy Stevens - Circular Cooperation - Interview on Environment  Biodiversity

This presentation introduced the new Biodiversity Benchmark, an initiative by Textile Exchange that enables companies to understand their impacts and dependencies on nature in their materials sourcing strategies. This was complimented by EOCA who presented their new biodiversity strategy.

Later on Friday Kim Scholze Community Manager Outdoor (ISPO), Messe München GmbH, Margo de Lange Policy Officer, It's Great Out There, Kilian Jornet Athlete,  and Christiane Dolva Törnberg Head of Sustainability, Fjällräven discussed just 'Why should physical activity be part of the sustainability agenda?'

During this session, the It’s Great Out There Coalition invited experts from the field to reflect on the role of  outdoor recreation and activity for nature conservation and the ins and outs of sustainable activity. Contact for more information.
