The winter sports industry takes next leap and joins Race to Zero

The Winter Sports Sustainability Network (WSN), managed by Peak 63 and the Federation of the European Sporting Goods Industry (FESI), takes an important step forward when the Winter Sports Industry Climate Pact signatories have officially joined the UN Race to Zero Campaign. This marks a significant step forward in the industry’s collective effort to fight climate change and advance toward carbon neutrality.

In 2024, the Winter Sports Industry Climate Pact was launched to address climate change and help its members achieve a net-zero carbon emissions future. A key commitment of the Pact was to improve climate efforts by joining the UN Race to Zero Campaign, which aligns and validates climate targets through internationally verified climate initiatives. Over the last year, the below listed brands have lived up to this commitment and will now take the next step in accelerating their climate work even further.

The Winter Sports Industry Climate Pact unites the industry to address the climate crisis head-on and take decisive action to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. Through this collective initiative, we acknowledge the industry's vulnerability to global warming, using our brand recognition and industry organisations to propel systemic change. For this purpose, we will work along the following five principles:

  • Focusing our efforts on the required greenhouse gas emission reductions, to keep global warming to 1.5°C, in line with the Paris Agreement.
  • Progressing our climate commitment by joining the UN Race to Zero Campaign before the end of 2024, with validated climate targets through internationally verified climate initiatives.
  • Guiding the industry forward in collaborative action, where the more ‘climate advanced’ companies support and guide their less advanced peers.
  • Leveraging our influence to drive systemic change by advocating for progressive state, national, and international climate policy.
  • Recognising how our industry contributes to the climate crisis and publicly addressing climate change as a top management priority for our business.

The following WSN members have to date joined the UN Race to Zero Campaign:
1000skis, Atomic, Blizzard-Tecnica, Burton, Dalbello, Decathlon, Dynastar, Elan, International Biathlon Union, Jones Snowboard, K2, Kästle, Lange, Line, Look, Madshus, Marker, Nordica, OneWay, Ride, Rossignol, Salomon, Stöckli, The Nidecker Group, Völkl

The winter sports industry cannot afford to stand by as climate change threatens its future.  By joining the UN Race to Zero, our industry is not just committing to climate targets—it is leading by example, proving that sustainable business and climate action go hand in hand,”

commented Jérôme Pero, Secretary General - FESI.

It's inspiring to see so many Climate Pact members committing to ambitious climate goals and already taking concrete steps to reduce their footprints. Protect Our Winters focuses on helping the outdoor community create a positive climate handprint, not just a smaller footprint. We're proud to see this principle embraced by the Climate Pact, with members influencing suppliers and governments to drive the broader action needed to avert the worst impacts of climate change. We encourage all relevant winter sports businesses, to join WSN and the Winter Sports Industry Climate Pact, and to use their influence for meaningful change.

Gillian Rosh, Head of Advocacy - Protect Our Winters.

Our Group-level commitment to the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a cornerstone of our decarbonization strategy. It requires a structured, long-term approach to reducing emissions in line with the 1.5°C target. It’s a big challenge—but one we fully embrace, because it drives us to be proactive, accountable, and innovative. By joining the UN Race to Zero, we’re reinforcing our responsibility to take meaningful climate action within the winter sports industry.

Michael Knye, Global Sustainability Manager - Elevate Outdoor Collective.

At Elan, we believe that performance must go hand in hand with responsibility. Joining the Race to Zero is not just a commitment — it’s a direction that guides how we innovate, develop and produce. As a brand born in the Alps, and focused on winter sports, we understand what’s at stake.  We are proud to be part of a coalition that is actively shaping a more sustainable future for the outdoor and sports industry.

Leon Korošec, Director of the Winter sports Division and Vice President - Elan Group.

The IBU is impressed by the significant progress made by the snow sports industry in addressing climate issues in the last two years. The industry’s commitment to action, exemplified by the number of brands that have now signed up to Race to Zero, shows that they are serious about having real impact. We look forward to working with the industry to drive further change among fans and all other snow sports stakeholders in the future.”

Riikka Rakic, Head of Sustainability - IBU.
