As a reminder, new EU requirements on consumer guarantees will apply from 27 September 2026, including a mandatory harmonised notice on the legal guarantee of conformity and, where applicable, the new EU GARAN label.

The requirements are relevant for members selling directly to consumers, including through their own stores or e-commerce channels.

1. Mandatory EU legal guarantee notice – applies to sellers

From 27 September, sellers of consumer goods in the EU must prominently display the EU harmonised notice informing consumers about their statutory legal guarantee rights.

In practice:

• Physical stores: the notice should be prominently displayed, for example on a wall or next to the checkout. The printed notice must be at least A4 size and may be in colour or black and white.
• E-commerce: the notice must also be displayed online, for example as a general reminder on the website, and must be shown in colour.
• The Commission template contains a QR code and cannot be modified. It is available in all EU languages.

The notice reminds consumers that goods sold in the EU benefit from a legal guarantee of at least two years, subject to potentially longer national periods.

2. EU GARAN label – only where a qualifying durability guarantee is offered

The GARAN label does not apply automatically to all products. It becomes mandatory where a producer voluntarily offers a commercial guarantee of durability which:

• is provided at no additional cost;
• covers the entire product; and
• lasts for more than two years.

Where these conditions are fulfilled, the producer must use the harmonised GARAN label and indicate the duration of the guarantee, brand/trademark and relevant model ID. Sellers must then display the label clearly to consumers, including online.

Commercial guarantees covering only a specific component of a product do not qualify for the GARAN label.

The Commission has now published practical guidance as well as downloadable high-resolution files for both the legal guarantee notice and GARAN label.

We therefore recommend that members with EU retail stores, direct-to-consumer websites and/or commercial durability guarantees check their implementation ahead of 27 September 2026.
