Commission publishes FAQ on the Digital Product Passport

SUMMARY
- The European Commission has published a new Frequently Asked Questions document on the Digital Product Passport. Members can find the document attached.
- The FAQ focuses on the general DPP framework and common requirements under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, rather than product-specific DPP requirements under separate legislation such as the Batteries Regulation.
- As with all documents of this nature, please note that the FAQ is intended as a living document and does not represent the official position of the European Commission or introduce any additional legal requirements.
MORE INFORMATION
The FAQ is intended to support stakeholders in the implementation of DPP-related provisions under the ESPR.
It covers several areas, including:
- the purpose and functioning of the DPP in practice;
- technical implementation milestones and expected timelines;
- impacts on industry, SMEs and consumers;
- the role of the DPP Registry and Web Portal;
- interoperability, harmonised standards, data carriers and voluntary data points;
- substances of concern, trade implications, compliance and enforcement.
The FAQ also clarifies that, while DPP requirements may originate from different pieces of EU legislation, all DPPs will rely on the same underlying technical system established under the ESPR, supporting consistency and interoperability across product groups.
