The European Commission publishes first CBAM certificate prices for 2026

SUMMARY:
- The European Commission has published the price of Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) certificates for Q1 2026, marking an important milestone in the implementation of the CBAM. This is the first of four quarterly prices that will be published throughout 2026.
- The price, published on 7 April 2026, is set at €75.36.
- Please find below FESI's Q&A on CBAM, with the most recent updates highlighted (in yellow).
MORE INFORMATION:
The price of CBAM certificates is calculated by the European Commission as the weighted average of the auction clearing prices of EU ETS allowances, based on publicly available auction data. In 2026, CBAM certificate prices will be published on a quarterly basis, with each price applying exclusively to emissions embedded in CBAM goods imported into the EU during the corresponding quarter.
Although authorised CBAM declarants will only begin purchasing CBAM certificates from February 2027 (covering their 2026 imports), the Commission has already started publishing prices in 2026. This early publication aims to enhance transparency, provide stakeholders with reliable reference points, and reduce the risk of inconsistent price estimates in the market.
From 2027 onwards, CBAM certificate prices will be calculated and published on a weekly basis. All CBAM certificates will be purchased via a common central platform starting from February 2027.
NEXT STEPS:
The next publication dates for quarterly CBAM certificate prices in 2026 are as follows:
Q2 2026: 6 July 2026
Q3 2026: 5 October 2026
Q4 2026: 4 January 2027
FESI will continue to monitor developments related to the CBAM, including future price publications and any additional guidance provided by the European Commission.
