New Eurobarometer on Sport and Physical Activity

SUMMARY:
- On 22nd September, the European Commission unveiled its new Eurobarometer on Sport and Physical Activity, ahead of the European Week of Sport (see attached).
- The new data show some positive trend: the share of Europeans who never exercise or play sport has decreased from 45% in 2022 to 39% in 2026.
- Overall, more Europeans are regularly active, with 38% exercising several times a week (+6 percentage points)and 9% almost daily (+3 percentage points).

A few other findings worth highlighting:
- Parks and outdoor spaces remain the most popular setting for physical activity, cited by 47% of respondents.
- The use of health and fitness facilities increased from 33% to 39%.
- Active commuting saw the largest increase, from 24% to 37%.
- The main motivation for being physically active is improving or maintaining physical health (44%), followed by relaxation (39%) and improving mental health (26%).
The Eurobarometer also highlights differences in participation across socio-demographic groups, including by age, education and financial situation.
