EFRAG consultation on revised and simplified Exposure Drafts of the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS)
EFRAG has launched a public consultation on the revised and simplified Exposure Drafts of the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). This marks an important development in the ongoing efforts to make sustainability reporting under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) more manageable and practical for companies across the EU.
In response to a formal request from the European Commission in March 2025, EFRAG has significantly streamlined the ESRS to reduce reporting complexity while maintaining relevance and alignment with the European Green Deal. Key changes include:
- 57% reduction in mandatory datapoints (when material)
- 68% reduction in total disclosures (mandatory + voluntary)
- 55% reduction in overall length of the standards
- New relief mechanisms, such as exemptions where reporting would cause undue cost or effort
- Clarified language, simplified structure, and removal of voluntary disclosures
These revisions are based on feedback from over 800 survey responses and broad stakeholder engagement, and they aim to support companies—especially those newly within CSRD scope—in adopting a more accessible and usable reporting framework.
The public consultation is open from 31 July to 29 September 2025.
We strongly encourage members to review the revised drafts and contribute your feedback. Chiara will take over this file when she’s back next week and provide more details on how and when to provide feedback to FESI.
EFRAG will also conduct outreach events in September and October 2025, and is undertaking a cost-benefit analysis and field testing, both of which are open for stakeholder participation.
