The European Commission's 2025 work program announced the release of a new Bioeconomy Strategy, currently expected to be published on the 12th of November 2025, based on the outcomes of public consultations launched before summer 2025. Members can find more details about the consultations here.

The main points of this new strategy on Bioeconomy include:

  • Addressing product development and market-entrance existing barriers
  • Developing lead markets for bio-based products
  • Ensuring biomass supply to face the increasing demand
  • Promoting EU's interests globally
  • Engaging with industries and civil society

A especial focus on to the promotion of Bio-Fibres: The Commission will promote the use of natural fibres, agricultural by-products, cellulose-derived materials, and biopolymer-based fibres for textiles and industrial applications. The upcoming Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is projected to increase demand by incentivizing circular product design.

  • Q1 2026 - Revision of the Bioeconomy Joint Undertaking
  • Q1 2026 - Creation of the Bioeconomy Stakeholders' Platform
  • Q1 2026 - Creation of the BioMade Europe Alliance
  • Q3 2026 - Biotechnology Act
  • 2027 - New Guidelines on Circular Business Model
  • 2027-2028 - ESPR Delegated Act on Ecodesign
  • 2028 - Establishment of the Competitiveness Fund

NEXT STEPS

The strategy is expected to be published on the 12th of November 2025. Once published, FESI will communicate it to members, update the analysis accordingly, and engage in the consultations as per members feedback.
