MORE DETAILS

The European Commission has presented a new EU-wide notice and label for products sold on the EU market. These new labels will help businesses better inform consumers of their rights and introduce uniform product labelling. The notice and label are implementing measures of the Empowering Consumer for the Green Transition Directive, establishing:

  1. A mandatory EU notice reminding consumers about their legal guarantee rights, which will be prominently on display in all shops, both online and offline. All consumers have a legal guarantee protection of at least two years on products sold in the EU; some countries have a longer legal guarantee period. When consumers receive, for example, a product that does not function as intended, sellers are obliged to provide free repair or replacement. In some cases, consumers may be eligible to a price reduction or full reimbursement. More detailed information is available here.

  1. A new EU product label for producers that choose to offer consumers a voluntary commercial guarantee of durability for a specific product at no additional cost to the consumer, covering the entire product, not just a component of it, and with a duration of more than two years.

European consumers are entitled to a minimum two-year legal guarantee on products, in line with EU consumer protection law. This guarantee requires sellers to provide, free of charge, a repair or replacement if, for example, a product does not perform as expected. In certain circumstances, consumers may also be entitled to a price reduction or a full refund.

NEXT STEPS

Member States must transpose the Empowering Consumer for the Green Transition Directive into national law by the 27th of March 2026. Once the Directive applies, from the 27th of September 2026, consumers throughout the EU will begin to see the notice and label in practice.
