EU Deforestation Regulation postponed by one more year
On 23rd September Environment Commissioner Jessika Roswall announced that the entry into applicability of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) will be postponed by one year.
MORE DETAILS
The official reason given for this delay is that the EUDR IT system set up by the Commission to process due diligence statements is not yet ready to handle such a large volume of information. Another factor is the difficulty of limiting the obligations placed on downstream operators under the EUDR, despite recent efforts to simplify these requirements for stakeholders.
For more details, please find attached the letter Commissioner Roswall sent to the Chair of the Parliament’s ENVI Committee announcing this decision.
NEXT STEPS
This decision must still be formally approved by both the Council and the Parliament before the delay can take effect. If approved, the Deforestation Regulation will likely apply from 30 December 2026 for larger companies and from 30 June 2027 for SMEs. FESI will keep members informed about the timeline as soon as further details become available.
