EU-US Commission confirms extended suspension of EU rebalancing tariffs on US goods

On 4 February 2026, the European Commission adopted Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/295 suspending EU commercial rebalancing measures on certain products originating in the United States, as well as restrictions on selected EU exports to the US. The suspension will apply from 7 February to 6 August 2026.
The measures, originally imposed in July 2025, were introduced in response to US safeguard tariffs on a wide range of EU exports, including steel and aluminium products and derivatives, vehicles and automotive parts, beer, empty aluminium cans, and various agricultural and industrial goods. They consisted of additional EU customs duties on US imports and export restrictions on certain EU products.
The Commission recalled that the EU and the US reached a political agreement (the Turnberry deal) on their trade relationship in July 2025, confirmed by a Joint Statement in August 2025, under which the US reduced tariffs on EU imports to a maximum of 15%. An initial six-month suspension of EU rebalancing measures was adopted in August 2025 under an urgency procedure.
Citing continued progress in implementing the political agreement, the Commission decided to prolong the suspension, while stressing that it remains under review. The Regulation is without prejudice to the EU’s position that US safeguard tariffs remain incompatible with WTO rules.
