U.S. announces 30% tariff on EU imports

On Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump formally notified the European Union of his decision to impose a 30% tariff on EU products imported into the United States, effective 1 August. This new rate replaces the current 10% reciprocal tariff. Please note that existing U.S. tariffs on aluminium, steel, and related products remain unchanged.

In a brief statement, President von der Leyen acknowledged receipt of the letter and reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to reaching an agreement by 1 August. At the same time, she underlined that the EU stands ready to take all necessary measures to protect its interests, including the adoption of proportionate countermeasures, if needed.

Separately, following the U.S. decision to delay the implementation of its additional tariffs from 9 July to 1 August, the EU has adopted Implementing Regulation 2025/1446, which postpones the application of EU countermeasures (originally triggered by U.S. steel and aluminium sanctions) to 6 August.
